Rise in vehicle crime sparks calls for vigilance

A RISE in the number of thefts from vehicles has sparked a warning for car owners to be more vigilant.

West Mercia Police has seen an increase in the amount of vehicles being entered by thieves across Astwood Bank, Crabbs Cross, Webheath and Batchley.

The number of thefts rose from 19 in October to 32 in January. It is believed thieves have been targeting vehicles in the early hours of the morning by trying car door handles.

A further five vehicles in Wythall and one in Hollywood also had items including a sat nav and wallet taken from them between last Thursday and Friday (January 16 to 17).

PC Richard Waterhouse, local officer for Redditch South West, said those which were unlocked had been searched before valuables were taken.

“We are working hard to resolve these issues, including increasing patrols, but are asking for assistance from our communities in securing vehicles, removing property and reporting any suspicious behaviour," he said.

“The single most important thing owners need to do is ensure their vehicles are locked and secured, including all doors, the boot, sunroof and windows.”

He added car owners should park somewhere secure overnight or in a well lit area."

Anyone with any information about vehicle crime should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
