A TRIO of men will have to pay more than £700 for illegally fishing in lakes in the county.

Chris Holland, of Evesham Mews, pleaded guilty to fishing with a rod and line without a licence by post to Redditch Magistrates' Court last Thursday (January 16).

About 3.45pm on July 6 last year, the 22-year-old was seen by a water bailiff fishing at Broad Acres Lake near Hanbury.

When the bailiff asked him to produce his licence he was unable to provide one.

His details were put into a database and it confirmed he had been fishing illegally.

Any angler over the age of 12 needs a licence to legally fish under the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act 1975 and they cost about £27 a year.

Magistrates ordered him to pay a fine of £50, costs of £127 and a victim surcharge of £20.

On the same day, Todd Morgan, of Ombersley close in Woodrow, was also seen fishing with a rod and a line at Broad Acres Lake about 3.50pm.

The 23-year-old failed to appear at court but the case was dealt with by magistrates in his absence.

He was ordered to pay a £200 fine, costs of £127 and a victim surcharge of £20 after failing to provide a licence.

Shane Jackson, of Adstone Grove in Northfield, also pleaded guilty by post after he was caught fishing without a licence with at Alvechurch Fishery on Bittell Road, on August 16 last year.

In a letter to the court, Jackson said he was extremely sorry for his actions and immediately rang his wife to purchase a licence.

He added it was the first time he and his son had gone fishing together and he had always been a law abiding citizen.

He was fined £50 and ordered to pay costs of £127 and a victim surcharge of £20.
