Studley and Alcester needs key too

THE NEEDS of residents in Studley, Alcester and the rest of South Warwickshire must be included when developing the proposals for the future of the Alexandra Hospital.

Coun Hazel Wright, who represents Studley on Stratford District Council, said she welcomed the panel’s recommendation of the retention of A&E and the fact the majority of maternity services would remain.

But she said the removal of overnight paediatric services and consultant-led deliveries raised questions about access should children require a period of stay in hospital and it was crucial when transport links were reviewed that consideration was not only given to how people would get from Redditch to the Worcestershire Royal, but from South Warwickshire as well.

“The people that have the greatest need for children’s services are usually the poorest people and even if they have cars they are often old and unreliable,” she said.

“Transport issues cannot be ignored. The parents are the main carers of children, not the NHS, and that’s often forgotten.

“If you are on a minimum income how are you going to get from A to B?

“Like most things this report is good in parts. But the issue of access as far as South Warwickshire is concerned, still remains a problem and must be addressed and included in the review.”
