REDDITCH’S MP swapped the comfort of the commons to try the latest craze in the fitness world to encourage residents to get active.

Karen Lumley joined residents at the Abbey Stadium’s recent open day where she took part in a sh’bam class - a cardio workout, fat and calorie burning activity which choreographs modern dance moves to chart-toppers and club hits.

Mrs Lumley took part in the session ahead of national obesity awareness week which began on Monday and ends on Sunday (January 13 to 19).

Mrs Lumley said huge efforts were being made to tackle the rising problem of obesity including extra investment in school sport, the introduction of free school meals for all children in Reception, Year 1 and year 2 in state-funded schools and encouraging healthy eating.

She said progress had been made in raising awareness of the issue in recent years with many restaurants and fast food chains now displaying calorie content on meals but more needed to be done including ensuring children were taught basic cooking skills they could use in adult life and making healthy food affordable and accessible.

“It’s going to take time but we’ve been at it for a few years now and we can’t give up on it, we have to carry on.”
