A MURDERER who went on the run from HMP Hewell has been given an extra six months in prison on top of the life sentence he is already serving.

Alan Giles was sentenced after he pleaded guilty to absconding from the open part of the Tardebigge prison at Worcester Crown Court today (Thursday).

The 56-year-old went missing on October 28 last year for ten days before he was found and arrested by police following a call from a member of the public.

He was found sheltering behind a wall in the Gunnings Road area of Alcester and tried to flee down an alley but was apprehended after two members of the Special Constabulary gave chase.

Up to 50 officers were working on the investigation and more than 100 potential sightings were received by police.

The former Oldbury resident was serving two life sentences for kidnapping and murdering 16-year-old Quinton student Kevin Ricketts in 1995 . He would have been eligible for consideration for parole this year.

Det Insp Stephen Tonks of West Mercia Police said: "During the nine days or so that Giles was missing there was a great deal of concern in the community, particularly in North Worcestershire where the prison is and in Warwickshire where most of the sightings were.

"We are extremely grateful to members of the public who rang in with sightings and for the hard work and commitment of the officers from West Mercia, Warwickshire and neighbouring forces.

He added the two officers who caught Giles should be praised and the case was an excellent example of the valued contribution that Specials make.

"An off-duty Police Community Support Officer who cycled in from home to join the search after a member of the public knocked on his door also deserves to be singled out for his dedication to duty."
