IT HAS been a busy start to the year and, as I’m sure is the case for many of my constituents, the Christmas break now seems like a distant memory.
As this is my first Standard diary column of 2014, I would like to take this opportunity to wish a very Happy New Year to all of my constituents.
2013 was a challenging year for many but our economy definitely turned a corner with the deficit cut by a third and 1.6 million private sector jobs created; I hope this continues throughout 2014 and that as a nation we continue to go from strength to strength. As I have said many times before, it is a real privilege to represent Redditch County and over the coming year I will continue to champion the constituency and all it has to offer in Westminster.
Parliament has now been back in session for two weeks. On my first day back I was delighted to have been able to champion two Redditch schools – Woodrow First School and Arrow Vale RSA Academy – in Education Questions. I took part in a lively Transport Select Committee hearing on winter resilience and the travel issues over the Christmas period.
I finished my week in Westminster by taking part in a debate on access to transport for disabled people – heaping praise on Diamond Buses for their work with Disability Action.
This week, as part of my role on the Transport Select Committee, I took part in a hearing on buses in isolated areas such as the villages in Redditch County and, continuing on this theme, on Wednesday took part in the ‘Big Bus Debate’ on the future of bus services on BBC Hereford & Worcester.
