A FREE running course is on offer to residents wanting to get off their sofas and burn some calories.

The Couch to 5k scheme begins this month and over nine weeks will support people to become able and confident enough to run five kilometres or 3.1 miles.

The professionally coached sessions take place weekly and are run by Redditch Borough Council and sponsored by Sainsbury’s. The final week of the course also coincides with the Sainsbury’s Sports Relief Mile.

Those taking part can download a series of podcasts from itunes to structure each run with music and coaching to develop running technique, speed and stamina progressively over time.

Coun Phil Mould, responsible for leisure on the council, said: “If you don’t run and you want to start, Couch to 5k may be perfect for you.”

People of all ages and abilities are welcome to attend the course which starts on Sunday, January 26 from 10am at the

Countryside Centre at Arrow Valley Lake. It then takes place every Sunday, until Sunday, March 23 which is the day of the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile.
