A GREAT-GRANDMOTHER described as ‘bullet proof’ has celebrated turning 100.

Edna Neale marked the milestone on Monday (January 13) surrounded by her family at Plymouth House nursing home in Tardebigge.

The centenarian was born in Redditch and at the age of three was ran over by a bike, breaking her back and resulting in a four year hospital stay.

During this time she lost her mother to the 1918 to 1919 influenza pandemic which claimed the lives of more than 35 million people worldwide - at least three times the number killed in the First World War.

As a young girl she battled through and grwew up in the town living on roads such as George Street and Walford Street as well as working at the needle factory on Arrow Road.

She married Norman Neale at St Stephen’s Church in 1937 and they were together for 53 years until he passed away in 1990.

Together they had five children including one daughter and four boys as well as ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Her son Ivor said Edna was a fighter and despite everything she managed to raise her family well.

“She was looking forward to The Queen’s card the most. She was really pleased when she got it.”

He added the 100-year-old, who has also broke her femurs during her life, still enjoyed going to the pub on Saturday.

“She definitely is a character, bubbly and still has life in her at this age.”
