A REDDITCH charity is backing calls to have the name and face of First World War heroine Edith Cavell included on a new commemorative coin.

Cavell Nurses Trust, based in Grovesnor House on Prospect Hill, is urging residents to sign a petition calling on the Treasury to produce a £2 coin in honour of Edith Cavell who nursed and saved the lives of all soldiers, regardless of nationality, during The Great War.

She also helped 200 allied soldiers escape German occupied Belgium and for which she was executed.

So far more than 30,000 people have backed the petition.

A £2 coin with the face of War Minister Field Marshall Lord Kitchener is already being produced to mark the centernary of the conflict later this year.

But Sioned-Mair Richards, a Sheffield City Councillor who created the petition, said he represented the jingoism, waste of men and 'lions led by donkeys' mentality of the war, whereas Edith Cavell was 'a nurse who tried to do her duty' and 'one of the best'.

Kate Tompkins, chief executive of Cavell Nurses Trust which was born out of donations made in Edith Cavell's memory following her death in 1915 and continues today to support nurses, midwives and healthcare professionals in need, added: "Edith Cavell nursed all wounded soldiers regardless of nationality saying to her nurses each man is a son, husband or father. As the charity set up in her name in 1917, just two years after her death, we are delighted with the support and recognition through the online petition of Edith's work as a nurse and for helping the 200 Allied soldiers escape from occupied Belgium.

"We are working with colleagues in Norfolk, Belgium and across the UK on a wide range of plans to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of this remarkable woman and nursing leader whose values were care and compassion."
