Rape and sex assault victims urged to come forward

VICTIMS of rape or sexual assault are being urged to come forward, no matter how long ago the attack took place.

Police and partners have teamed up to call on residents to seek help and report what happened.

Work is also being done to dispel myths most women are likely to be raped by a stranger - instead more than 80 per cent know their attacker and 53 per cent of perpetrators or serious sexual assaults are current or former partners.

Det Supt Steve Cullen, head of protecting vulnerable people in Warwickshire and West Mercia, said: “If you have been raped, we understand that you may need time to think what to do next. We recognise that rape and serious sexual offences remain under reported to the police for a range of reasons. We are committed to ensuring victims are given every opportunity to tell the police what may have happened.

“We want you to know that if you decide to report to the police we will take you seriously and our specially trained officers will strive to get the right outcome for you.”
