A BOROUGH supermarket has made a surprise donation to Redditch Food Bank to mark the launch of its online ordering and delivery service.

Morrisons dropped off two trolleys worth of food to one of the bank's distribution centres at Oasis Christian Centre off Plymouth Road earlier this week.

The donation was part of a trial run before Morrisons, which has a store off the Warwick Highway, begins its first online deliveries in Redditch on Friday.

Luanne Watton, community champion at the Redditch store, was behind the decision to donate to the food bank.

She said: "We’re extremely excited Morrisons.com is launching in our area. It was great to be involved with the test-run and to offer the food bank a donation which we hope will make a real difference."

Redditch residents are amongst the first in the UK to be able to place an order using the website, with the company expecting to cover 50 per cent of the UK by the beginning of 2015.

It has also been revealed over the Christmas period more than 100 parcels of food and toys were delivered to families in need thanks to the generosity of the Redditch public and The Entertainer store in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre.

In total £11,500 worth of toys and food were donated to the project on top of at least 1,000 hours put in by volunteers.

It allowed 189 children to receive £30 of brand new toys each.

Rev Robin Baker, from Redditch Food Bank, said: "A big thank you to everyone who donated food or toys or their time, we have been able to help so many people.

"There's so much need in our town, but there are also many people that care about helping others."
