Clubcard debacle sees disabled councillor stranded

A DISABLED councillor was left stranded in his car outside an Alcester supermarket after staff failed to help him.

Sir William Lawrence, who has lived in Alcester for more than 50 years and who regularly visits the town's Tesco Express, is usually assisted with his shopping.

But on Monday night (January 6), despite calling the Tesco helpline to see if he could collect 16 unclaimed Clubcard points, when he arrived at the shop no one would come out to help him and a manager refused to put the points onto his credit card.

The Stratford District Councillor, who has served for more than 30 years and uses an electric wheelchair, said: "I said to the woman on the phone I have a little Tesco Express next door to where I live and she said that I could do it at any store as they could use the number on my credit card."

He then drove alone to the Kinwarton Road shop and asked a lady outside if she could get a member of staff to come out to him.

"I could see a a problem occurring. The lady said someone wouldn't come and serve me by my car," he said.

The lady offered to get some carrots for him as well as collecting his unclaimed Tesco points but was told the store was not authorised to do it.

The lady then went back in to tell staff that Sir William had used the shop to collect his points many times before and asked for a manager to speak with him.

He said: "A manager came out and told me she had worked there for a long time and the store couldn't do it and I would have to go to a main store. And that was that.

"It was just ridiculous. I have never had a problem with the store before this and they've always been helpful.

"I've got my points there before and it's my only means of putting Clubcard points onto my card."

A Tesco spokeswoman said they were sorry for any inconvenience caused to Sir William.

"We have since spoken to him and added the Clubcard points to his account, plus an extra 100 points as a gesture of goodwill."
