Victim Support marks 40 years

AN INDEPENDENT charity which began life as a community project is celebrating its 40th birthday.

Victim Support, now with branches across the UK including in Redditch, gives burglary victims information about securing their homes, organises pre-trial visits and supports families bereaved due to violent crime.

The charity, which uses outreach branches such as doctors’ surgeries and has a witness service based at the town’s magistrates court, also helps victims of bullying, harassment and domestic abuse as well as providing letters of support for a house move to victims of anti-social behaviour.

Staff contact more than a million victims every year and help more than 200,000 people giving evidence in court, with new evidence from their records showing an estimated 55,000 volunteers have helped the charity over the years.

A series of celebratory events will be taking place over the coming months to acknowledge the contribution of both volunteers and staff.

Paula Farley, divisional manager for Worcestershire, said: “We rely on the hard work and dedication of our staff and volunteers to provide support to local victims and witnesses of crime, helping them to recover and move forward with their lives.

“I am very proud of the excellent support we provide in Worcestershire and we will continue to make every effort to ensure victims and witnesses are supported throughout the criminal justice process.”
