THE FORMER Barclays Bank and HMRC offices are set to be sold off by the council after lying empty for years.
Threadneedle House on Alcester Street, which was built in 1983, has been declared a surplus asset by Redditch Borough Council.
It contains three separate units, two of which are now empty and the third of which is occupied by the Post Office on a 50-year lease until 2032.
The whole building will be sold with any potential buyer made aware of the existing tenancy.
The decision was approved at a recent executive committee meeting where councillors were told the building cost £72,000 a year including business rates, utilities, security and maintenance while extensive refurbishment needed to bring it up to modern office standards would cost in excess of £850,000.
Coun Mark Shurmer said: “What we have at the moment is an empty shell. It could be something very exciting to revitalise the town centre.”
Coun John Fisher said: “Having an empty property in a prime location like that isn’t ideal. We really need to maximise as much benefit that we can get from managing our assets and disposing of them when they are surplus. That’s what the taxpayers of Redditch expect us to be doing right now.”
Coun Debbie Taylor added the sale gave potential to see the area revitalised and enabled more economic growth within the town.
