Ten cars raided in crime spree

MORE than ten cars have been broken into in a spate of random thefts across the town in the run up to Christmas.

Cars have been targeted across the borough with items including a driving licence, perfume, petrol and light fittings taken.

Incidents included one between December 16 and 17 on Auxerre Avenue in Greenlands when the fuel line was cut under a Rover 416 Tourer and all the petrol drained from the vehicle.

The brake light fittings were then stolen from a grey Land Rover Freelander parked in a layby in a residential area on Hopyard Lane, Winyates between December 13 and 14.

A front number plate was also taken from a red Citroen C1 which was parked on Flyford Close in Lodge Park between 2pm and 8.55am on December 14 and December 16.

Other incidents included a driving licence being stolen from the glovebox of a black VW Polo parked on the rear driveway of a home in Rowan Crescent, Batchley, between December 16 and December 17.

A man also saw two people smashing the front window of a vehicle in Slimbridge Close, Crabbs Cross, on December 16. The man shouted to them and they ran away.

Most of the vehicles had been locked and there were no signs of forced entry.

Five further thefts from vehicles were reported around December 23 including in Winyates, Matchborough and Oakenshaw.

A spokeswoman for West Mercia Police said some of the thieves may have been looking for Christmas presents and urged residents to take simple steps to make life harder for criminals.

This included making sure the vehicle was locked, not leaving personal items on display and parking in well lit areas.

She added they were looking into the fact the offences may be linked.

Anyone with any information should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
