Top movies of 2013 named

IT WAS the year of the sequel in 2013 as follow-ups brought film fans flocking through the doors of Redditch’s cinema.

Just three original films made it into the top ten viewed films by audiences at Vue Cinema in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre, the rest were either sequels or reboots of a previously established franchise.

Despicable Me 2 claimed top spot with Gru, Margo, Agnes, Edith and the minions returning to our screens for more good versus evil mayhem following the success of their first outing in 2010.

It was closely followed by Pixar’s Monsters University, the prequel to 2001’s Monsters Inc.

Iron Man 3 and the Fast and the Furious 6 also made it into the year’s top ten.

A couple of December releases also found favour with Redditch cinema-goers with the second part of the The Hobbit series, The Desolation of Smaug, making it into tenth place despite only being released three weeks before the end of the year.

Animated adventure Frozen, loosely based on the fairy tale The Snow Queen, also claimed eighth place despite an early December release date.

Anthony Lockett, marketing manager at Redditch Vue Cinema, said: “It’s not surprising to see three of the top five films are kids films as this is the genre that does particularly well here in Redditch.

“It’s also interesting to see seven of the top ten films are sequels or remakes with The Croods, Les Mis and Frozen being the only original films to make it to the top.

“For me the biggest surprise was Fast & Furious 6 which did better than any of us here had expected as the previous sequels of this franchise were low performers. I think the coming together of the original cast for the sixth instalment reignited the public’s passion for the series.”

Films predicted to do well in 2014 include Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, the fifth in the supernatural series due for release in January and which has previously captured the imagination of Redditch audiences.

February sees Lego hit the big screen for the first time along with Mr Peabody & Sherman in time for half-term.

And it promises to be a blockbuster year with more sequels on the way including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Rio 2, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past all due for release from March onwards.
