SHOPPER numbers at the Kingfisher Shopping Centre are rocketing despite the doom and gloom surrounding the high street.

While footfall has been falling both nationally and across the West Midlands the centre, which was bought by owners Capital and Regional in a £130million deal in 2012, has been bucking the trend over the past two months.

December saw seven per cent more people coming through the Kingfisher’s doors compared to the same time last year, with a record 34 per cent rise on Monday, December 23 as shoppers rushed to grab last minute presents.

About 300 people packed into the centre before 6am on Boxing Day hoping to snap up a bargain in the Next sale, while just over 2,000 shoppers had arrived before 9am - a 25 per cent increase on 2012.

Overall the week including Christmas Day saw a 4.6 per cent rise in footfall.

In comparison across the UK during the same week footfall was down 13.9 per cent on 2012 and close to 18 per cent in the West Midlands, according to figures from Experian Regional Index.

Centre manager Ken Williams said: “By comparison Kingfisher has had a very strong Christmas.

“We have worked hard to build a positive relationship with our shoppers, and whilst we still have a great deal to achieve to re-position the centre in the catchment, our progress in reclaiming market share is very encouraging.”
