Police updates direct to your phone via Twitter

POLICE updates will now be sent directly to mobile phones in a new Twitter service.

West Mercia and Warwickshire Police have signed up to Twitter Alerts which allows subscribers to be sent emergency information including warnings, evacuation details and safety alters.

The system will be used for serious incidents only which means people can receive urgent updates.

Users will receive the alert as a text message and it will also appear on their Twitter timeline with an orange bell, while Apple and Android users will also receive a notification to their smartphones.

Kate Quilley, head of corporate communications, said: “With many of us carrying our mobile phones wherever we go, being able to send out alerts in real time this way is a fantastic way for us to ensure people are kept informed during a time of crisis.

“We will use the service sparingly to ensure that only the most important updates are sent from it, but we would urge anyone who lives, works or visits the Warwickshire and West Mercia force areas to sign up to keep informed.”

Visit www.twitter.com/wmerciapolice/alerts and www.twitter.com/warkspolice/alerts to sign up for the updates.
