THE FOUNDER of the Alcester Male Voice Choir has been awarded a British Empire Medal.

Judith Land was named in the Queen's New Year's Honours list for her services to music and the community.

The former Alcester Grammar music teacher formed the choir with the help of students, teachers and parents, after moving to the area from Wales.

The accolade comes as they celebrate 40 years of performances together including the Royal Albert Hall as well as cathedrals in Perugia, Germany, and Brittany.

The Oakenshaw South resident said she first found out she was nominated about six weeks ago but never believed she would be picked.

"You sit on edge for a little while just waiting. It was extremely thoughtful of whoever nominated me and who thought I deserved it. I'm just sitting and trying to absorb it all, it truly is a privilege and I'm honoured.

"I've had 40 glorious years with my choir. I feel immensely proud of them all and I have to thank the community for their support. I think it is going to take a while for it all to sink in."
