New pay offer halts strike at aerospace firm

A WALKOUT at a Redditch firm planned for Wednesday has been called off.

About 300 workers at Mettis Aerospace on Windsor Road were due to strike for 24 hours from 6am.

But the Unite union has cancelled the walkout after the management made a new 2.5 per cent pay offer, an improvement on the two per cent originally being offered.

A mass meeting at the plant is being held at midday on Wednesday when staff will vote on the new deal.

Unite regional officer Bob Shaw said: "After talks today (Tuesday 17 December) with the company, the improved offer was made that will be put to the workforce tomorrow.

"It will be for the members to decide whether they wish to accept the offer. In the meantime, the strike due to have started at 6am tomorrow has been postponed."

The union say the company had already imposed a pay freeze for 2013 and had previously offered two per cent for the following three years, although Mettis pointed out the deal included a site performance related bonus, staff flexibility and a new improvement scheme.

A spokeswoman for Mettis Aerospace had previously accused the union of risking 80 years of manufacturing at the plant by taking industrial action.
