AN AMBITIOUS project has been launched to provide a new village hall which could cost up to £1million.

But the Webheath Village Hall committee is calling on residents to shape the future of the venue by giving feedback on what they would like the building to provide.

Ideas include building on the current car park at the Heathfield Road site which would move the hall further away from nearby houses and enable more parking spaces to be created. Provision for indoors sports is also being considered.

To secure funding for the project, which is likely to cost over £500,000 but could end up being double that depending on the final design, the committee has urged residents from across the town as well as Webheath itself to have their say.

Chairman Fred Tebbs told the Standard they wanted to make improvements before the current hall - which was built in 1925 on land donated by Victor Woodfield - got ‘onto its last legs’.

It is currently open seven days a week with more than 20 regular users and is a registered charity managed on a voluntary basis by the trustees.

“The time has come to see if we can raise sufficient funds to build a new hall with amenities that are suitable for today’s society,” he said.

“We don’t know whether or not we want sports facilities, in Redditch we are restricted for indoor spaces so we may incorporate that if residents want it.

“We would like to be in a position to start the major fund-raising after Easter but there is a lot of preparation to get through an we want to get the community, not only in Webheath but the residents of Redditch, behind us to try and help us.”

Surveys will be made available on the website and be distributed to residents nearby. Residents can also respond by writing to Webheath Village Hall, Heathfield Road, Redditch, B97 5SQ or using the contact form at webheathvillagehall.org.uk and answering the following questions: Gender? Age group? Do you think village halls have a role? What usage should village halls be put to? Do you feel they should cater for all ages? Should it include sports facilities? Do you use village hall facilities? Should village halls have grants or should they be self-funding?
