DOZENS of drivers were breathalysed as part of a police operation aimed to increase road safety on a busy village road.
Officers from West Mercia Police were out in force in Inkberrow High Street near Redditch on Friday night (December 13) in a bid to crackdown on speeding motorists and drink drive offences at a time when temptation is high with Christmas around the corner.
The special operation, which was based at the car park of the village’s Grey Gable GP surgery, saw 40 drivers pulled over for breath tests and two drivers were handed notices for excessive speeding on the 30mph road.
The operation is part of West Mercia’s annual Drink Drive Campaign and officers decided to use the main road as a location because drivers regularly speed on it.
Prior to the car park’s entrance one of the officers used a special laser gun to clock drivers’ speed coming down the road.
Anyone which was slightly over the limit was forced to pull in to the car park and were advised about their speeding.
PC Cath Broadfield, who led the operation, said the event had been a success and followed a similar operation held in Worcester city centre earlier this month.
“Our ultimate aim is to use this opportunity as an awareness raising exercise and to educate the motorists we stop but enforcements were made for offences which had to be dealt with,” she said.
“Tonight is a Friday night and a lot of people are having their Christmas parties. Earlier in the week our colleagues did a similar operation which targeted early morning drinkers who maybe still over the limit from the night before.
“So we thought we would try a different time in the day where people may have had early evening drinks.
“This time of year also unfortunately shows a disproportionate number of drink drive related offences so we had officers available with the ability to breath test any motorists suspected of being over the drink drive limit.
“We are not here to penalise people but to advise and educate people about their speeds and drink driving especially at this time of year and with adverse weather conditions.”
Officers said they were planning on hosting other similar operations at other locations across the county in the run up to Christmas.
