RESIDENTS scared for their children’s safety have called for traffic lights to be installed at a busy junction.

Families have complained about the speed of cars going down Archer Road, which is being used as a ‘rat run’ since the bus lane was opened up at the top of Easemore Road just under a year ago.

They have urged the county council to consider lights at the Easemore Road/Archer Road junction, saying they are fearful an accident could happen.

Coun Alan Mason, borough councillor for the area, said: “They changed the layout so cars could come through and since that day, we have got a major influx of cars going down Archer Road. Before it was more of a trickle.

“There will be an accident down there before long. Cars are going down so fast people are worried about their children’s safety.

“They understand the reason for doing it so people haven’t got to keep going all around the town but the problem is that it’s a parking area, one or two have said they have nearly had cars ramming them when they are trying to park.”

A Worcestershire County Council spokesman said residents calling for traffic lights in any location across the county would need to approach one of their ward councillors, who would then be able to make the request to the council for a consultation to take place.

He added the temporary traffic regulation order which opened up the bus-only section of the road had recently been made permanent which meant, unless there was a significant change in terms of traffic flow or safety issues, it could not be reviewed for at least two years.
