COMMUNITY spirit flourished as pupils, staff and residents dug deep to plant nearly 400 trees at Woodrow First School.

More than 50 people, including students from Kingsley College and the Beacon school, got their hands dirty as part of the Big Tree Plant.

The campaign, which encourages communities to become greener by planting more trees across England, provides grants to schools and organisations in a bid to improve residents' quality of life.

Sebastian Benney, teacher and project co-ordinator at Woodrow First School, said Woodrow was very fortunate to be selected as one of ten schools in the region to receive trees as part of the project.

He added: "It has been amazing to see what a powerful tool planting trees can be to engage the community, and we hope to have left a legacy for generations to come."
