MORE than 200 council flats and houses will be upgraded as part of a renovation project by Redditch Borough Council.

The work, which is set to begin in March across Abbeydale, will include new porches, roofs, guttering, fascias and the external painting of 228 homes.

Tenants in the town have personally chosen the colour scheme after council officers painted a number of colours on the end wall of a property for everyone to see.

Pastel colours such as buttermilk, beige, mushroom and cream have been picked over the option of aqua green and blue.

The project is expected to last six months and the painting and roof work will run at the same time to reduce the cost of scaffolding by nearly 50 per cent.

Adrian Guida-Jones, property services officer and project manager, said: "Scaffolding is a significant element of the cost so cutting that in half means we can get this work done far cheaper, in less time, with less disruption to the residents."

Coun Mark Shurmer, responsible for housing on the council, added: "This is the latest work in the council's ongoing, rolling program to improve our housing and keep it all up to the decent homes standard. The tenants have had a lot of involvement too, which is important."

Budgets, contracts and work schedules have all been agreed and subject to weather conditions the work could start as early as February.
