AN ALCESTER care home hosted the party of the century for a special resident who turned 100.

Gertrude Arthars was joined by friends and family at Meadow View Care Centre on Saturday (November 30) to celebrate the milestone.

The former French polisher, whose official birthday was last Thursday (November 28), moved to the home five years ago after previously living in Studley and Coughton Fields.

Mrs Arthars also worked in the needle industry and set up life with her late husband John where they had two children together, Michael and Judith.

The centenarian now has three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild and another two will be arriving in January.

She enjoyed a buffet and music from Flanagan and Allen, who were a British singing and comedy double act popular during the Second World War.

Michael said: "She really really enjoyed the day. She couldn't stop smiling and she was especially pleased with her card from the Queen."
