A COUNCILLOR has apologised for suggesting the Conservatives would use a council committee to delay the decision on Redditch United's relocation bid for political gain.

The Conservative group attempted to get the decision to reject the proposal deferred to allow the Overview and Scrutiny Committee to investigate it fully and make recommendations.

But Labour councillor Phil Mould, a former chairman of the committee, said: "Overview and Scrutiny can delay anything for an extremely long time and I suggest O and S would drag this on under the instruction of the Conservative group to report just prior to the local elections next year."

His comments were criticised by deputy Conservative group leader Brandon Clayton who said: "If that's the case we are saying the Conservatives are for supporting the club and Labour are against.

"This football club should not be about politics it's about the town."

Conservative group leader Coun Juliet Brunner added it was possible to conduct a short, sharp review on the subject and Coun Mould was doing the committee, made up of both political parties, a disservice.

After the meeting Coun Mould said: "I spoke out of turn about O and S and I retract my statement."
