Redditch Monopoly to go on sale

REDDITCH'S own version of Monopoly is to go on sale from Thursday.

The game will be officially launched at 1.30pm in Worcester Square in the the Kingfisher Shopping Centre when Uncle Moneybags will also be present.

As the Standard revealed two weeks ago, the game has been devised by Redditch Town Centre Partnership along with Winning Moves, which is officially licensed by Monopoly owners Hasbro to produce location dedicated versions.

Based around the town centre area it features a number of recognisable streets such as Unicorn Hill and Church Green, as well as landmarks such as the Palace Theatre and bandstand. The chance and community chest cards have also been changed to include unique instructions.

It has been backed by a number of businesses including main funders the Kingfisher Shopping Centre, NEW College and Diamond Bus company.

The Redditch Standard also has its own square on Church Green East. Other businesses involved include E Response Recruitment, Davies Springs Ltd, Redditch Borough Council, Heaphys Menswear, Redditch Local History Society, Westgrove, Rilys Indian restaurant, Redditch Market and PHF Training Ltd.

Several towns and cities have already got their own Monopoly game but Redditch’s version has a number of unique features.

As well as streets and landmarks recognisable today, it also features those lost as part of the New Town development such as Kingfisher Hall.

Redditch Local History Society has produced a special booklet which will be given away with each version explaining where each of the lost streets were located and giving more information about them.

Diamond has also commissioned a bus playing piece unique to the Redditch game which will be included with the board.

The game is the first of a series of events and projects to celebrate next year’s 50th anniversary of Redditch becoming a new town.

It costs £29.99, the same as standard Monopoly, and all profits from sales will be ploughed into promoting Redditch Town Centre, in particular next year's 50th anniversary celebrations.

Pre-orders are currently being taken at the Kingfisher Shopping Centre customer service desk in Worcester Square where the game will also be on sale along with other outlets to be announced. Pre-orders can also be placed by calling the Standard's office on 01527 588688.

Ken Williams, TCP chairman and Kingfisher centre manager, said: “I am proud to see the production of the game recognising past landmarks that the people of Redditch will recognise, or learn about.

“This edition has been put together by dedicated Redditch residents and will not only celebrate the town’s heritage, but also demonstrate the TCP’s value in bringing such a project to fruition and the spin-off benefits that will be realised.”

Sarah Lewis, from Diamond, said: “We are excited to be involved in the Redditch edition of the Monopoly board game and the 50th anniversary celebrations. Throughout the year we will be putting on various competitions based around the board game so keep your eyes peeled for chances to win passes and other exciting prizes.”
