A MATCHBOROUGH man has been jailed for 13 years after a serious sexual assault at knifepoint almost two decades ago.
Mark Richard Harrison was found guilty aggravated burglary and indecent assault at Worcester Crown Court on Thursday, September 12.
The incident happened in Wythall in April 1994 when the victim, who was in her late 20s, arrived home from work on her birthday.
The woman, who did not know Harrison, was unlocking the door when she was grabbed from behind and taken into the kitchen, where she was forced to lie face down on the floor and was tied up.
She was threatened with a knife and subjected to a serious and prolonged sexual assault.
The 51-year-old from Allensmore Close, a self-employed driving instructor, was arrested in 2012 after being traced through his DNA during a cold case review conducted by West Mercia Police's detectives.
Detective constable Jim Crowther said: "This happened during broad daylight as the victim got home from work. She told him it was her birthday and begged him not to hurt her, but he covered her face, tied her up, and carried out a prolonged attack.
"It is every woman’s worst nightmare to be attacked by a stranger in their own home. In this case the victim was looking forward to an evening celebrating her birthday but experienced a horrific, life changing assault.”
"Advances in forensic science meant that we were able to link Harrison to the assault, but he denied the charges, putting the victim through the further ordeal of having to give evidence at the trial.”
"We hope the lengthy jail sentence handed down by the court means that after nearly 20 years she can finally have some peace of mind, knowing her attacker is behind bars.
"Bringing this offender to justice demonstrates West Mercia Police’s commitment to ensure serious undetected historical offences are under continuous review, reflecting advances in forensic science."
