INJURED soldiers are set to benefit from a surprise party to celebrate a Redditch man joining the army.
Mother Lorna Preston raised £520 for Help for Heroes through a raffle at AT&T and a party at Alcester Rugby Club, which was an early birthday event for son Matt who is set to turn 21 during his training this December.
The Hunt End resident, who previously worked for Tesco.com, is joining the Air Corps on September 16, which will see him taking part in 14 weeks of preparation for army life in Surrey.
“He has wanted to do it for a very long time and is really excited,” his mother told the Standard.
“I like to do little things for charity and when he was 18 I did a similar party for the Stroke Association. This time I wanted to do something that was meaningful for what Matthew was going to do.
“We are very proud and I know he will make a great success of it.”
