PLANS to build homes on a ‘dangerous’ bend have been put on hold over fears lives could be put at risk.
Residents living nearby and both Lodge Park councillors spoke out against the proposal for 12 properties off Wirehill Drive, which they said was plagued by motorists driving at up to three times the speed limit.
They claimed there had already been numerous crashes on the corner where the houses would be sited and the two accesses in and out would increase the likelihood of future incidents.
Pete Blewitt, speaking at a Redditch Borough Council planning meeting on Wednesday (August 28) and who lives on Himbleton Close opposite the area which could be developed, said: “Drivers come up from the school or come down from the other side and speed up to go up the hill. You have cars go up there in excess of 80 or 90 miles an hour.”
Coun Andy Fry added: “Both accesses are in a very dangerous place. Cars come from the left and they speed downhill, by the time they get to the bend they are going at a considerable speed.
“There have been many accidents and near misses there in the past, both Coun Shurmer and I have been nearly knocked over there in the past.”
The County Highway Network Control had raised no issue with the proposals, but objectors said when outline planning permission - which has now lapsed - was previously given for development on the site in 2008 it was ordered safety alterations must be made before any building could occur.
No changes had been made, they said, and Coun Mark Shurmer called on the committee to insist on traffic calming measures as part of the conditions of the application if they granted permission.
The meeting was also told the loss of open space would mean children would have nowhere to play.
Councillors voted to defer making a decision on the application so a site visit could be made.
