AN ELDERLY woman was kicked in the stomach as she answered the door to a salesman.

The attack happened on Tuesday afternoon (March 19) in Hither Green Lane, Bordesley, when the woman in her 60s opened the door to a caller who she believed to be a door-to-door salesman.

After declining to buy anything, the person came back to the home again asking for the time.

He then returned for the third time and barged into the home before kicking the victim in her stomach.

The attacker fled after the woman called her husband who was upstairs at the time.

Although she did not need medical treatment, the woman suffered from shock and discomfort.

Police urged residents, especially elderly or vulnerable people, to not open the door if they were not expecting or did not recognise a caller.

Using a chain on the door was also advised.

A 15-year-old from the Middlesbrough area was arrested on suspicion of assault on Tuesday evening and was released on bail until May 8, pending further inquiries.
