Fresh plans to turn hotel into flats

By Connie Osborne Friday 15 March 2013 Updated: 15/03 08:15

NEW plans have been submitted to transform Alcester’s Globe Hotel in to flats.

Owners Karyn Maddison and Martyn Lolley are seeking permission from Stratford District Council to turn the 11 bedroom hotel on Birmingham Road in to four separate flats.

The application was submitted after a previous bid to create eight flats within the building was refused, which the owners are currently appealing against.

A statement submitted by the owners as part of the application states the change of use is necessary because they believe the hotel is no longer financially viable and despite the asking price being substantially dropped and a change of estate agent, no one was interested in buying it.

“Since we purchased the Globe six years ago it has never been able to break even and required us to contribute huge amounts from our personal savings in order to keep it up and running.

“Over the past couple of years we have noticed a significant dip in occupancy in the months from October to March particularly, despite us offering our rooms at a cheaper rate.

“We have seen there is just not the need for all these short-term rooms to be on sale in Alcester which is why we wish to diversify into offering longer-term rental accommodation instead.

“This will ensure the continuity of the Globe albeit offering rental in the form of flats and also fulfil a need within the area for rental property.”

Public consultation on the plans ends today (Friday) and a decision is expected by April 15.
