Beoley firm to face crown court trial

BOSSES at a Beoley company will face trial at crown court following the death of an employee.

Stephen Walker from R and S Recycling appeared before Redditch Magistrates' Court today (Tuesday) charged with breaking health and safety regulations.

The Health and Safety Executive started a civil case against the firm after Kenneth Swaby lost his life in February 2011 at the company's base in Beoley Lane when a bale of rubbish fell on him and crushed him.

It is alleged the firm failed to put proper measures in place to ensure their employee Mr Swaby was not exposed to safety risks, breaking rules set down in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

The jury at an inquest last year ruled the 43-year-old from Canvey Island in Essex had died as the result of an accident caused by a falling stack of bales which were inappropriately stacked due to a lack of training and inadequate safety measures.

Mr Walker will appear before magistrates again on May 8 for committal to crown court, following which a trial will take place.
