Walker calls for action on mess

A DISGUSTED dog owner has slammed fellow walkers for failing to pick up after their pets with some leaving bags filled with poo tied to trees.

Susan Village, who walks her two Labrador puppies across the fields between Woodrow North and Throckmorton Road, said she was horrified and fed up by the amount of dog mess, despite bins being available.

She said: “It’s absolutely foul. The field is just covered with poo because people cannot be bothered to clean up after their dogs.

“Some people are even picking up the mess but then tying the bags to trees. It’s just totally disgusting.

“There are plenty of bins around and they are never full, so I don’t understand why people aren’t using them. If you’re responsible enough to own a dog, then you should be responsible enough to clean up after them.”

The Woodrow resident added one of her puppies had already rolled in poo and she feared it could happen again and get into its eye.

“People forget how harmful it can be. My puppies don’t have the same immune system as older dogs, so it’s potentially really dangerous,” she added.

“You’re supposed to enjoy walking your dogs and now I just end up having to watch my step and keep an eye on the dogs in case they roll in it.

“Worst of all I think of all the children walking through there that could fall over into it.”

A spokesman for Redditch Borough Council said they were drawing up plans to target areas where dog fouling was an issue as part of their Love Where You Live and Mucky Pup campaigns.

“As well as raising awareness of the health issues around discarded dog poo in the newspapers and signs, we have been going out to educate people,” he said.

“This includes spraying dog poo to highlight it, giving away free poop bags and enforcement where there is evidence for us to do so.”

She added the council also ensured grass verges were cut as evidence showed short grass was less attractive for dogs to mess on.
