Second attempt to put housing plan to the public

COUNCILLORS will reconsider plans to consult on building 3,400 new homes over the border in Bromsgrove later this month.

Consultation on the proposals, which would see building in Foxlydiate and off Weights Lane backing on to Brockhill, was due to start on Monday (February 25).

But the controlling Labour group on Redditch Borough Council failed to get approval for the plan at a full council meeting last week, after two of its councillors left the room leaving them outvoted by the Conservatives, who do not accept the homes planned outside of the borough's boundaries are needed.

Neighbouring Bromsgrove District Council has approved putting the growth strategy to the public and sent a letter to the borough council asking it to reconsider its position as a matter of urgency under the duty to co-operate outlined in the Localism Act. It also agreed to delay the consultation until April 1 as it needs to be carried out jointly by both councils and forms part of a wide process to adopt a development plan for each council.

Council leader Bill Hartnett has now asked for the plans to be reconsidered by the executive committee on March 12 and full council on March 25.

"Cross boundary consultation is important so we can take on board comments from all our residents and I am pleased to give this important document further consideration."
