Lambert triumphs in epic bout

REDDITCH Community Amateur Boxing Club middleweight Brad Lambert was involved in an epic and ultimately successful battle last Friday night against Studio ABC (Birmingham) boxer and Redditch fighter Carl Dickens.

Both boxers are known for their come forward, crowd-pleasing style of boxing and each engaged in a three-round war - much to the delight of the packed crowd at Kings Norton Ex-Servicemen's Club.

Lambert started the first round brightly and threw thunderous right hands that might have stopped a lesser opponent but Dickens - strong and fit - took them well and replied with heavy punches of his own.

Within a minute of the fight beginning Dickens' eyes were swelling up and Lambert's nose was bleeding. In the dying seconds of the opening round, Lambert landed a short right that wobbled Dickens but the tough Studio boxer soon gathered his senses and the war continued until the bell.

The second round went to Dickens. Despite giving away 3kg, the Studio boxer trapped Lambert on the ropes and it looked like the bout was swinging in favour of the more experienced boxer.

Both lads threw bombs that were bouncing off each other's granite jaws but Lambert seemed to be tiring and Dickens grew in confidence, only for Lambert to finish the round with a big attack.

The last round was going to be the decider, with everything pretty much even. It was toe to toe for three minutes and neither boxer would take a backward step.

Lambert would land a jab, Dickens would land a jab, Lambert would land a hook, Dickens would land a hook.

Both boxers looked exhausted but they carried on punching until the final bell and the crowd gave both lads a well deserved standing ovation after what was probably one of the most exciting amateur bouts in years.

As the boxers came to the middle of the ring to hear the decision, the referee gave both boxers a special mention that was greatly received by the supporters.

It was very close but rightly the split decision went in favour of Lambert of Redditch Community Amateur Boxing Club.
