Former Mayor calls for action on uneven path

A FORMER Mayor of Redditch is calling for safety improvements to a town centre street after being seriously injured following a fall.

Madge Tillsley MBE had two of her teeth knocked out, needed stitches in her lip and injured her knee after stepping off the pavement in Church Green West near to Heaphy's menswear shop.

She is only able to eat certain foods such as soups and stews and has only been able to leave her home in Smallwood once since it happened at the end of December.

But Mrs Tillsley has now decided to speak out and demand action after receiving calls from other people who have fallen near the same spot.

The 81-year-old told the Standard: "I fell right into the road. If a car had been coming it could have been a lot worse or I could have broken my thigh or leg.

"The kerb stones are uneven and too high. I wanted to warn people this is dangerous and something needs to be done."

Coun Terry Spencer, who represents Smallwood on Worcestershire County Council, has raised the issue with highways bosses.

Jon Fraser, the council's highways manager, confirmed they had received a report of the incident.

"We will be investigating the matter to determine what action, if any, may be required."
