Pancake fun in Alcester

IT WAS a flipping great day for the winners of Alcester's annual pancake race.

Hundreds of residents lined the High Street to cheer on family and friends as they raced against each other in the town's traditional Shrove Tuesday showdown.

A total of 18 races took place, with everyone from tottering toddlers to sprinting seniors competing for chocolate treats.

Twins Jasmine Williams and Cole Williams, both ten, had an extra sweet treat on their birthday after they both came first in the Year 5 and Year 6 races for Our Lady's Catholic Primary School.

Winners of the toddler races included five-year-old Vincenzo Marro, four-year-old Jacob Selby, three-year-old James Burton, three-year-old Dominic Hempell and four-year-old Rilley Johnston.

St Nicholas' Primary School pupils Joanne Stephens, ten, and Ruby Lee, ten, won the Year 6 girl's races while Will Wrenn, ten and Owen Jones, ten, picked up the top prizes for the Year 6 boy's races.

Chloe Field, eight, and Michael Okonske, nine, scooped first place in Our Lady's Primary School's Year 3 and Year 4 boys and girls races. And Rowan Hope, ten, came top in the Year 6 boy's race.

Alcester Academy's Charlotte Sabin, 13, also won the Year 9 round.

The women's under and over 18s saw Maddie Glasbey, 18, sprint her way to first place, while 17-year-old Harry Wilson bagged the top spot in the men's under and over 18s.

And the pancake race cup went to staff at The Holy Bush on Henley Street, with Rory Thompson and Ben Addison just nipping into first place.

John Mills, High Bailiff of Alcester Court Leet which organised the event, said: "The High Street was lined with supporters, it was so good to see people supporting their grandchildren and nieces and nephews, cheering them on.

"This is such a tremendous day for the children as they get the most out of it. The looks on their faces is just fantastic.

"I'm proud of all the Court Leet officers who put the time in volunteering. I think next year I'll advise them to get extra chocolate eggs though."
