FASTER broadband speeds could be enjoyed by residents in Feckenham within a month after the completion of a ground-breaking new deal.
The Redditch Travel Arc Consortium, which includes parish councils in Feckenham, Crowle, Hanbury, Stock and Bradley and Tibberton, has signed contracts with community internet company Airband to increase the speeds available to residents accessing the web.
Currently Feckenham residents struggle to get upload and download speeds above 1mpbs because the village is too far from the telephone exchange meaning they are unable to use services which are now commonplace such as watching TV, shopping or paying bills online.
Using wireless technology through a series of masts, Airband can provide speeds of between 10mbps and 20mbps.
The travel arc group has received £268,000 from the Worcestershire Local Sustainable Transport Fund to help upgrade infrastructure in the area to provide the new service to about 1,220 residents and 27 businesses.
Rhys Williams, chairman of Feckenham Parish Council, said: "At the moment we get an appalling service, you can't get anything other than a basic email service, so we are delighted by this news."
The group has been working with Worcestershire County Council which has secured the funding as part of its plan to deliver superfast broadband of more than 24mbps to 90 per cent of the county by 2015 and at least 2mbps in more remote areas.
The council has received £3.35million from BDUK and £8.5million from its own funds to help realise its plans.
Coun David Thain, responsible for transformation and change on the council, said: "This is a great day for these communities. We are continuing our drive for faster Broadband across the county and for people living in all areas, including these communities."
