Woodrush are undone late on

By Liam Moakes Monday 07 January 2013 Updated: 10/01 15:31

WOODRUSH led their hosts Evesham for three-quarters of Saturday's Midlands Three West (South) match but the home side's superior fitness levels were the telling factor as they recovered to a seal a 32-22 victory.

Woodrush's superior forward power saw them force their way over three times in the first half, with two tries coming from second row Luke Russell and one from No 8 Matt Playford. Steve Smart added two conversions and a penalty.

However, Evesham had kept themselves in touch with two breakaway tries which kept their half time deficit to ten points at 22-12.

Although Evesham scored again early in the second half, the score remained at 22-17 until the last quarter.

By then though Evesham were in the ascendancy and piled the pressure on the Woodrush defence, which finally cracked as the hosts scored in the corner to make it 22-22.

A draw would perhaps have been a fair result but a penalty shortly afterwards made it 25-22 to Evesham and they then sealed victory with a chip through in the corner which their winger ran on to and touched down.

Tomorrow eighth placed Woodrush entertain bottom side Redditch who, despite their position, have produced some improved performances of late.
