ALCESTER'S Martyn Brookhouse has been rewarded for his efforts and dedication in supporting sport for people with special needs by winning the NFU Mutual Community Sport Award at the Stratford District Council Sports Awards.
The prestigious Celebration of Sport event - sponsored by NFU Mutual, Rybrook Stratford MINI and Everyone Active - was held last Friday at the Stratford Manor Hotel and marked the sporting achievements of clubs, schools and individuals across the district in 2012, as well as recognising the wonderful contributions made from so many volunteers and parents who work tirelessly behind the scenes.
Martyn works with both youngsters and adults with learning difficulties having launched the Stratford-based Maverick Sports to help those with special needs enjoy sport, including junior multi-sports, tennis coaching at Alcester Tennis Club and a fitness club for adults.
He is also a coach of the Stratford Special Football team, which saw off competition from sides including Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Coventry City and West Bromwich Albion to win the Birmingham Ability Counts League in 2011/12.
There were around 250 guests presents on what was a proud night for Martyn, who also saw the Stratford Special Football team clinch the runners-up prize in the Senior Team of the Year category and one of its players - Tom Clifford - named runner-up in the Senior Sports Person of the Year section.
Martyn said: "It was a tremendous night and the sort of occasion which makes all of the effort worthwhile.
"It's very rewarding to see the hard work paying off and I hope the teams can continue to go from strength to strength."
