Council plans to knock down 50 garages

NEARLY 50 garages could be knocked down in a bid to improve parking in Lodge Park.

Plans submitted by Redditch Borough Council would see garages in Evenlode Close, Aldington Close, Chaddesley Close, Belbroughton Close and Twiners Road removed to create 13 extra parking spaces and 11 wheelie bin collection points.

The aim is to improve the general appearance of the area after a consultation with residents revealed a number of the garages looked unsightly and were in need of refurbishment.

Many of the garages were found to be too small for vehicles and were often left empty or used for storage.

Garages which had been sold to residents under Right to Buy legislation will remain.

Borough council leader Bill Hartnett said: “Replacing unused old garages with useful new parking spaces, as well as creating new bin areas and other landscaping improvements, will be a boost to residents.

“Some of these garages are still used for storage but as you can’t really fit modern cars in them, many have become obsolete. It makes more sense to put the space to better use as improved parking.”

A decision will be made on the plans by March 7.
