REDDITCH’S MP has backed the Prime Minister’s decision to offer voters an in or out referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union.
David Cameron announced this week he wanted to renegotiate the country’s membership of the EU and wrestle back powers from Brussels, before offering people a choice of whether to accept the new deal or leave the union. The vote will take place by 2017 at the latest, if the Conservatives win the next General Election.
Borough MP Karen Lumley, vice-chairman of the Fresh Start for Europe group which last week released its manifesto setting out its vision for a new relationship with Europe, said it was right people could voice their opinion on any new deal.
“We joined the European Union to trade with it, not be run by them. We need to renegotiate as many powers back as we can but the British people need to agree with what we have done. If Europe won’t negotiate with us, then it’s right the British people have their say,” she said.
“Being an integrated member of the single market is what Europe should be about, instead far too often European directives and bureaucracy are damaging UK business and intruding far too deeply into the everyday lives of the UK public.”
