CREATIVE couplets and perfect poems were in store for Redditch pupils receiving top tips from a former poet laureate.

Spoz visited Birchensale Middle School to offer advice to students, using imagery and word bursts to build up poems during his Slam workshop.

Headteacher Hilary Dowding said: “This culminates in a fun day that makes literacy cool and something to be revered and not rejected.

“The pupils were buzzing with excitement and laughter at this original way of creating poetry. We all enjoy having Spoz in school, he creates such a positive enthusiastic buzz - it’s catching.”

At the end of the session pupils competed against each other for the best poetry slam performance, with the winning group going on to compete against 17 other schools in the final at the Palace Theatre in March.
