PLANS to open an amateur boxing gym aimed at bringing together the community have been given the go ahead.
Councillors unanimously approved the application from Redditch Community Amateur Boxing Club to take over Units 1 and 2 in Matchborough Centre after hearing the team would provide classes for the unemployed, children and overweight as well as training for those hoping to box competitively.
Todd Reeves, one of the head coaches at the club, spoke at the Redditch Borough Council planning meeting on Wednesday (January 16) to inform members they hoped the gym would drive more people to use the centre.
"We plan to use boxing as a competitive sport but also as a vehicle for social change, social integration and bringing the community together.
"Being a very popular boxing club I think will have a dramatic impact to the retail area and create an influx of people to the area which will in turn be of benefit to the other shops as well."
The gym will be open six days a week and aims to provide around eight hours of classes and training each day, as well as outreach projects in and around the borough.
