AN UNKNOWN substance caused alarm after it was found at a Redditch factory.

Crews from Redditch and Bromsgrove, the environmental protection unit based at Stourport, an incident response unit based at Droitwich and the West Midlands detection, identification and monitoring (DIM) team as well as police officers were all called out to Transmec in Crossgate Road following the discovery of the powder.

A spokeswoman for Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said the call was received at 11.25am on Tuesday (January 15).

"There was a small amount of an unknown powder in the loading area which was being contained under a sheet of cardboard.

"Fire service personnel cordoned the area off while the DIM team took a sample of it for testing. The investigation concluded the powder was believed to be aluminium phosphide which was no longer a risk in the form it was in and it was handed over to the health and safety manager."
