A FORMER warehouse has been turned into a new training centre for young people.

Midlands based Nova Training has opened the centre on Clive Road which will provide courses to upskill 16-to-18-year-olds long-term.

It will deliver apprenticeship programmes in motor vehicle, customer service, business administration, retail, warehousing and sales, as well as offering a Foundation Learning programme, giving young people skills and qualifications to progress to further education and employment.

The unit features three classrooms with IT and plasma screen televisions and a motor vehicle workshop for trainees to gain practical skills. The move will create between ten and 12 jobs.

Latest figures show there were 500 18 to 24-year-olds claiming jobseekers' allowance in Redditch during November, down from the previous month but almost double the number before the financial crisis hit in 2008.

David Bucknall, operations director at Nova Training, said: "We have already recruited five staff. Additional staff will be taken on as the provision develops.

"Building works have been completed, staff have been working in the local community and we are in the process of welcoming our first learners."

Nova Training is part of recruitment agency Staff Select Ltd which has more than ten years experience in supplying temporary and permanent staff across a wide range of job sectors.

The Redditch site is one of 15 Nova has across the region and has been secured on a three year lease with the help of borough based property agents John Truslove.

Director Ben Truslove said: "With skill levels being a big issue in the West Midlands this is vital work which Nova and Staff Select are undertaking. Their expansion is another boost for Redditch - every job created is so important given on-going unemployment figures."
