A RESILIENT display earned Redditch United a second successive 1-0 victory in the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division as they defeated Chippenham Town at the Valley Stadium on Saturday.

A heavy pitch made playing conditions difficult and the hosts rode their luck at times, but it was a day for defensive solidity and the Reds were able to celebrate a win which lifted them into 13th place - six points above the drop zone and five adrift of the play-offs.

After a bright opening from the Bluebirds that saw Dean Griffiths head straight at United keeper James Wren and Scott Rogers fire over, Chippenham fell behind in Redditch's first attack on 13 minutes.

Rogers conceded a free kick and, before the Bluebirds' defence could organise, the kick was swiftly knocked across to defender Gary Moran whose shot from distance deflected off a defender and gave keeper Ben John no chance.

The goal buoyed the home side and Jake Reid wasted two good opportunities to increase the lead as the former Chippenham player first fired into the side-netting from close range before failing to beat John in a three-on-one breakaway.

After the interval substitutes James Guthrie, Tom Knighton and Lee Phillips added much-needed impetus to the Chippenham attack as the Bluebirds created a host of chances, but Redditch were prepared to defend in numbers and on a treacherous playing surface they kept their visitors at bay.

Luke Ballinger twice went close as one shot was blocked and another deflected wide before Alex Kite was narrowly off target with a headed effort and also shot over the bar.

The Reds will be aiming to continue this momentum tomorrow when they welcome Bashley to the Valley.

UNITED U21s won 3-0 at home to Knowle in the Birmingham County Cup on Saturday in their first game under the new management of Julian Workman.

With five players making their debuts for United and with it being their first game for four weeks, the odds favoured the Midland Combination outfit, but the hosts produced a superb display to seal victory.

The hosts dominated the first half but excellent goalkeeping denied Mallam, Omorose and Bib.

Redditch's possession football tired the visitors and the hosts deservedly broke the deadlock in the 61st minute when Mallam headed home from an Omorose corner.

This opened the floodgates and United produced wave after wave of attacks as they peppered the Knowle goal.

Stan and Gomes were both denied but in the 72nd minute Gomes put a superb ball through to Omorose after some neat work from Cooper and Omorose slipped the ball past the advancing Knowle keeper to put United 2-0 up.

With ten minutes remaining a rare Knowle attack saw United concede a penalty after Futila brought down the Knowle striker but Reds keeper Lostitch stood tall and produced a superb save to his left to preserve the hosts' clean sheet.

From this save Lostitch launched a Redditch attack which saw Thomas link up with Stan, only for the latter to be brought down by the keeper, and up stepped Gomes to finish the scoring from the spot.
