REDDITCH MP Karen Lumley was gambling on a huge pay out for charity when she popped in to a town bookmakers.

Mrs Lumley visited William Hill on Unicorn Hill to discuss how they operate as well measures they take to identify people who may be developing a gambling problem or trying to launder money.

She was invited by the Association of British Bookmakers, which also took the opportunity to raise concerns about a new 20 per cent tax on gaming machines which it is feared could put some shops out of business.

While there Mrs Lumley was also treated to a free £50 bet which she put on Birmingham City and Newcastle to win. Unfortunately both lost but the shop has still agreed to donate the stake money to the Primrose Hospice.

Peter Craske, from the ABB, said: "Most MPs have never been in a betting shop before so we invite them in to challenge perceptions and show them the range of things you can bet on. If they are going to make decisions about the industry then they should understand what they are legislating on."
